While the wonders of modern communication technology can distract much of the time, at the end of the day – when the iPod and cell-phone sit in their chargers, when the television’s relentless barrage is finally shut off – millions are finding, through bitter experience, that there is nothing that can substitute for the hand not there to hold, for the baby not there to cradle.
