THOUGHTS FROM THE STATE DIRECTOR

... if you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. John 8:31b-32

The Greek word for truth is alethes/aletheuo, and it means unconcealed, manifest, actual and conforming to reality. When Jesus said to the disciples that He was the Truth, He was telling them that He is God manifest in a man. If we were talking about the myriad pagan deities of the Greek and Roman world, that wouldn't mean much because they were subject to capricious behavior and were not always reliable. However, Jesus was saying that He was holy and righteous God and that He alone held the keys to the kingdom of God.

Jesus the only way?
Absolute truth such as depicted in the Greek is a rarity in our modern world. Everyone seeks to put a "spin" on things; they want to make it seem what it is not. To absolutely believe something is a source of derision for the modern world. Just as Jesus was taking the religious leaders to task in this statement, modern churches deserve a rebuke as well. A poll by a mainline Protestant denomination in 2008 surveyed over 5000 individuals with 59 to 70 percent of the various groups polled responding. One of the statements to which they were asked to reply was whether or not they agreed with the statement that "only followers of Jesus can be saved." They could agree, disagree or remain neutral or unsure. Almost half of the pastors surveyed (45 percent) responded they did not agree with the statement; and over 60 percent of the specialized clergy (seminarians, hospital chaplains, military chaplains, etc) said they did not agree that Jesus was the only way to salvation. If one factors in the "neutral" and "unsure" responses the response was 65 percent for pastors and 78 percent for specialized clergy. The absolute truth of Jesus' ministry, life, and death and resurrection is being rejected by clergy. I have to ask the question why then do they call themselves a church? Why not establish a country club? Paul said that if we do not believe the truth about Jesus' coming, death and resurrection then our faith is in vain.

The truth hurts
The recent controversy over the Tim Tebow ad is a good case in point. The soft-sell ad was about Pam Tebow's "choice" to risk giving birth to a child that might have been harmed by the strong drugs she had to take early in her pregnancy. Those who advocate "a woman's right to choose" went ballistic over the ad, claiming it was inappropriate for family time. What they didn't say was the truth, as Shar Hoffman CWA of Kansas associate director said, "How could they respond? They would have to tell the truth that the abortion choice was about taking a life, not saving it. What kind of ad could they run?" She is right; the truth is sometimes too black and white, too ugly, too inconvenient and too troubling for those who want to "be captains of their fate and masters of their soul." The truth is even in movies like The Blind Side in which a young African-American man is helped by a white family to achieve goals he could never have attained if he had remained on the streets. His mother, who wasn't even sure who his father was, had been forced to relinquish custody of him and his brother at an early age. Apparently she had many more children. The truth is that if one adheres to the "truth" of the pro-abortion folks, he should have been aborted because he met their criteria ... unwanted, and unplanned. Their truth is, in reality, a lie. The idea that an unborn child can be assaulted in the womb because of size, location and development, not to mention convenience is not only unjust, it is based on a lie. A society that adheres to the right to eliminate the "unwanted" and the "undesirable" is a society doomed to destruction because it has chosen death instead of life.

The truth reveals
In a recent conversation with one in the homosexual lifestyle, I was ridiculed because I said the definition of "sexual orientation" is not specific in a bill giving civil rights to "sexual orientation" and "gender identity"; that even the American Psychiatric Association lists thirty- plus "paraphilias" under the definition of "sexual orientation." I suggested that perhaps they should describe the behavior they want to protect so that the law will not apply to the other behaviors. Their response was predictably short and blunt; they don't want the truth to be told; they don't want to see it in black and white. In spite of biological truths, they want their behavior to be hidden.

The truth is the gateway to freedom
Public policy is dependent upon truth for it to be fair and effective. The recent revelations about "climate-change / global warming" scientific facts and data being "cooked" to reflect an ideology tells us that we need to be more diligent to seek the truth. A society that wants to be free must have as its foundation the truth.
