THOUGHTS FROM THE STATE DIRECTOR

"For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God." Romans 8:19 NASB

On one of our recent preludes to spring, I was cleaning up the debris left over from winter in my yard when I became aware of a sound I had not heard for months. Song-birds were singing their hearts out, and my heart sang with them. They seem to be saying that winter cannot last forever; there is a new day coming with life and promise and the revealing of the perfection that is to come. I have always loved what Isaiah 55:12 states that the trees "will clap their hands" at the coming of Messiah and His kingdom.

Frozen hearts
There are many days in our lives that seem frozen and dead like the winter just past. Our hearts, minds and souls are caught in icy fingers of despair, discouragement and frustration. Yet every now and then we experience a harbinger of the joy that is to come . . . an existence where the trees do clap their hands; the flowers never disappear and fade; and the earth is a fertile and inviting place like a well-watered garden.

Hope and perseverance
As I watched the robins busily searching for worms singing their eternal song and searching for a place to place their hope . . . a nest to bring forth the little robins to be born, I marveled at the timeless and endless cycle of birth, death, and re-birth that is part of our existence. I watched and learned from them about perseverance and hope. In spite of the beautiful sunny day we were experiencing we (the robins and I) knew that nasty cold weather was coming back . . . weather that would throw the earth back into icy gloominess. Yet they persevered at doing what they have always done . . . participating in the cycle of waiting for the return of the King. And they did it with JOY. I could almost hear Mrs. Robin humming her little song of the promise of life and fruitfulness to come.

The King is coming
Later I looked out into the field outside our kitchen window and saw several does . . . very pregnant does, and my heart thrilled at the thought of those little fawns that would soon be toddling after their mamas in search of food. The deer have had to satisfy themselves with mostly dead and tasteless branches and the occasional green patch of grass for months; yet they too have persevered because they know what is coming. They too are participating in the endless cycle of waiting for the King. Soon the field will be full of prairie grass, tasty shrubbery and probably my flowers. Their long winter is almost over, too.

The long wait is almost over
I guess what I learned that day is that in spite of circumstances . . . the long dead frozen days that never seem to end . . . we too can have hope and that we must persevere and continue at the tasks that God ordained for us before the foundation of the earth. He is coming back! If He doesn't come back before my ordained days are over, then He will take me to where He is . . . to my new mansion. Even when everything else seems to be screaming the opposite of hope, I can know that joy comes in the morning and that I can choose to be joyful in spite of the long wait for the King.

Meanwhile . . .
Meanwhile, even as an alien and sojourner on this yet incomplete and unperfected world, I can do as the robins and deer do. I must keep busy doing what I am supposed to do, knowing that spring is coming.

In Him,
Judy Smith
