THOUGHTS FROM THE STATE DIRECTOR

THE SLIPPERY SLOPE GETS STEEPER

Many years ago I watched a video series by Francis Schaeffer and former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop in which they warned of a dangerous "slippery slope" associated with abortion and euthanasia and other medical bioethical issues. I remember thinking that I didn't even know anyone who would advocate the end of that slippery slope ... infanticide, eugenics, coercive population control, the "duty to die" and many other tragic results of starting down that slope. I could not imagine that our country could ever espouse such ideology, especially when many of us lived through the stories of the atrocities of World War II. We saw first- hand the results of Hitler's evil ideas of developing a master race via the killing of millions of people he deemed undesirable or unfit to remain in the human gene pool. I was shocked by these men's warnings; it wasn't as if I didn't believe them - human nature is after all what it is - I just couldn't imagine the country I loved being deceived by such evil philosophies. The Americans I knew were truly compassionate toward others; most of us understood that every human life has intrinsic value from birth to natural death and most Americans would defend that unalienable right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

An insidious internal take-over
Little did I know that a quiet revolution was going on behind the scenes - an insidious permeation of every institution; every purveyor of information and even our churches, particularly the mainline denominations. I didn't realize, nor did most of us, that this silent "takeover" of the gatekeepers of ideas would produce such a bitter harvest. Complacency, apathy, and indifference to what the intelligentsia was promoting were a catalyst to the burning fire that swept over our country. The tongues of flame shouted "A woman's right to choose"; "Death with dignity"; "Every child a wanted child"; "The right to die" and other high-sounding and appealing mantras that drew Americans and have ultimately consumed our society's ability to reason. The philosophies of Malthus, Kinsey, Nietzsche, Sanger, Huxley, Marx, and others lit the fires, and their pamphleteers, the media, fanned the flames until our whole nation is beginning to look like scorched earth instead of the land of the brave and the free.

Ideas have consequences
Ideas do have consequences. The consequences of a nation embracing these philosophies from hell are staggering. Forty-five million children aborted; skyrocketing sexually-transmitted diseases; unbelievable atrocities committed against innocent children by those fulfilling their own lusts; patients being euthanized without their consent, and humans being demoted to mere animals with no intrinsic value unless they can contribute to society. We are hurtling down the slope like a car that has lost its brakes while going down a steep grade. Unlike the truck ramps designed to slow a truck with failing brakes, we have little recourse other than flying off into space and crashing below and being consumed by the flames of anarchy, self-interest and rebellion against God.

The hope
Our only hope is to slow the inevitable descent into oblivion. We must learn how to apply the brakes by speaking out logically, reasonably and in love to our friends and neighbors about these evil philosophies. People are mesmerized by words; words designed to appeal to our baser impulses ... selfishness and a desire to be master of our own fate and captain of our soul. It is no wonder that people have been deceived. Americans are thinking with their emotions or not thinking at all, and it is our job to sound the alarm. We are watchmen on the wall; we have been called to warn fellow Americans to apply the brakes before it is too late to stop. Our GPS is the Bible; why are we listening to the insidious whispers of an enemy that seeks to destroy? We have the Truth, the Way and the Life. Our path has been marked out for us before the foundation of the earth; why are we listening to those who would send us down the precipice of no return?

Wake up, American Christians, before it is too late!

In Him,
Judy Smith
