THOUGHTS FROM THE STATE DIRECTOR

Thoughts about Planned Parenthood

Imagine for a moment that you are a fireman who has received a call from the arsonist about a fire. You want to respond to investigate the nature of the fire, the whereabouts of the fire and the intensity of the fire. However, the arsonist turning in the alarm tells you that he cannot give you the address of the fire; you will only be given a spread sheet provided by him with possible locations for the fire. You are to look at the spreadsheet and determine what the most likely spots are for the fire, knowing that the author of the spreadsheets could be giving you only the information he wants you to have, not necessarily the information you need to put out the fire.

An inappropriate and ridiculous situation
That of course is a ridiculous situation that would be rejected by most people as totally inappropriate. Yet in Johnson County that is what Planned Parenthood has proposed for a grand jury called for by a citizen petition to investigate whether there is enough evidence to indict Planned Parenthood concerning alleged violations of the law. Four sitting judges have found probable cause already; in fact there are 107 charges pending relating to only 29 of the records they perused.

The target of an investigation supplies their version of the evidence
The target of this investigation as to whether Planned Parenthood (Comprehensive Health) is following Kansas law is Planned Parenthood, yet District Judge Kevin Moriarty cut a deal with them for them to go through the records themselves and provide a "spreadsheet" of information to the grand jury to investigate whether they need more information. Just like the arsonist giving the fire department a grid of possible locations, Planned Parenthood, the target of the investigation, is going to be trusted to submit a spreadsheet that will accurately represent what the Johnson County grand jury has requested to see.

A travesty
This is an absolute travesty and an affront to every person who signed the petition to seat the grand jury and to the grand jury themselves. Anyone who thinks that justice will be served by allowing the target of the investigation - Planned Parenthood - to provide information that could possibly incriminate them would be like trusting a murderer to supply the pistol with his fingerprints on it.

Do we want to uphold the rule of law or not?
Everyone who believes that the rule of law should be upheld should be disturbed by a sitting judge who agreed to this arrangement, placing himself in the position of being a witness to the grand jury. Anyone who has any sense at all would be disturbed by the fact that justice is being blinded by possible tainted evidence.

Think about it.
