OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRASS-ROOTS
ACTIVISM
Opportunities abound this year for you to get
involved in grass-roots activism on the state level.
We have developed a “Lobbying Team” that has
many levels of involvement from “prayer warrior” to
issues specialists. We want to be an active part in
the legislative process this year, not only to promote
our cultural worldview but to be an encouragement to
legislators that share that worldview. There is
nothing more discouraging than to be commissioned
by God for a big assignment and then find no one
supporting you. Many of the legislators do feel they
are representing the Christian worldview in the
Legislature, but they cannot do it alone. They need
us writing letters and e-mails, writing letters to the
editor, and coming to Topeka to be a visible presence
at the Capitol.
Our needs:
- Observers . . . those who sit in and listen to
committee hearings and sessions of the Kansas House
and Senate
- People to read bills . . . a job that can be done
from home
- Researchers who will write talking points for our
side of the issue
- Bill trackers who track the progress of bills that
we either support or oppose . . . this too can be
done from home
- Encouragers who will thank legislators for
supporting our positions . . . something that can be
done from home
- “Issues specialists” . . . these people would need
to make application for the position, receive approval
and would be considered “experts” in one or more of
our core issues
- People to call others when we send out alerts
If we all work together, each doing one small part of
the task, we can be an effective voice at the
Capitol. Please listen for God’s small still voice urging
you to be involved this year.
SOME THINGS TO MONITOR
JESSICA’S LAW:
Jessica’s Law was passed by the Kansas Legislature
last year after much work and effort. This law
created much stiffer penalties for a repeat sex
offender who commits violent acts against children.
It stiffened the laws for predator’s registration and
generally made our streets safer for children.
Apparently, however, some legislators voted for the
bill because they wanted to be re-elected, but now
are considering weakening the statute because they
worry about prison bed space. In our opinion, the
fact that they are worrying about the number of
predators that would crowd our prisons underlines the
fact that this legislation is needed to protect our
vulnerable and helpless children. Obviously there are
vast numbers of these predators loose on the streets
thanks to leniency by the courts and
prosecutors.
We will be monitoring this closely; you can help by
sending letters and e-mails and making phone calls to
your legislators at the appropriate time urging them
to keep predators in prison. Currently, parents and
their children are in a prison of fear until these people
are in prison . . . at least long enough to complete a
sex-predator program.
ABORTION:
The investigation of medical records will continue as
long as current Attorney-General Phill Kline is in office
thanks to a recent Kansas Supreme Court dismissal of
the clinics’ request to dismiss. It is unclear whether
incoming Attorney General Paul Morrison will continue
the investigation of the clinic’s failure to report
statutory rape when a child under fourteen obtains
an abortion. Phill Kline has recently been appointed
to Morrison’s old job of prosecuting attorney for
Johnson County where it is expected that the clinics
in Johnson County will undergo some scrutiny over
failure to report statutory rape and other violations
discovered in the redacted (all private information
removed) files.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
As you celebrate the Christmas season with your
family and friends, remember the real reason that we
celebrate . . . that God’s infinite mercy provided for
our salvation through the advent of Jesus Christ . . .
King, Priest and Sacrifice all in one tiny baby.
