Broadcast Indecency

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that indecency sanctions will be levied against FOX, CBS and NBC. They have received numerous complaints about the nature of some of the programming on those networks; however, many of these sanctions will not include fines.

Lanier Swann, Legislative Director for CWA, said, "If you are concerned about what you see on television, make sure your elected officials know about it, and make sure the FCC knows about it." Future sanctions could include substantial fines if the current rulings don’t seem to result in less profanity and sexual content.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear challenge to Partial Birth Abortion Ban
Last Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it would hear a case that challenges the federal ban on partial-birth abortions, which was passed by the U.S. Congress in 2003. The law was ruled unconstitutional by three federal appeals courts because it doesn’t have an exception for the mother’s health, and the case has been appealed to the Supreme Court. When Congress was debating this legislation, testimony was given that a partial-birth abortion was not necessary to protect a woman’s health. Many pro-life court watchers, including CWA’s Chief Legal Counsel Jan LaRue, hope that the recent appointees to the U.S. Supreme Court will make a difference in the outcome of this case. In 2000, they voted 5-4 to strike down a ban on partial-birth abortions and retired Justice Sandra Day O’Connor voted with the majority.

South Dakota passes a ban on abortions
Last week, the South Dakota Legislature passed a ban on all abortions except those necessary to save the life of the mother. One of the chief sponsors of the bill was Sen. Julie Bartling, a Democrat from Burke, SD. She acknowledged that there is a "movement across this country on the wishes to save and protect the life of the unborn." Gov. Mike Rounds (R) is expected to sign it into law.

Linda Schauer, state director of CWA of South Dakota, said, "Pro-life citizens of South Dakota are proud of state lawmakers who boldly stand up for the right-to-life and for the protection of women. It is time to take a stand against judicial tyranny by overturning a heinous decision that violates states’ rights and has killed 45 million unborn children. Abortion laws are based on one of the greatest suppressions of truth in Supreme Court history."

Schauer continued, "However, much prayer is needed." Planned Parenthood has said that they will challenge the law, and it will most likely proceed all the way to the Supreme Court as both sides of the debate see this as an effort to overturn Roe v. Wade.
