THOUGHTS

During another night as a candidate for "Sleepless in Leawood," I was reading Deuteronomy as part of our church’s "Walk through the Bible" year-long project. I had a lot on my mind, and it didn’t help much to be reading Deuteronomy, chapters 28 through 32, in which Moses tells his people about the blessings and curses the people would encounter depending upon their obedience. As I read through the awful things that would and did happen to the people of Israel, I could not help but personalize it and think of our own nation. Moses gave a clear choice to his people, those who would be entering into the Promised Land: "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants." Choosing life would be to walk in obedience with God’s laws and statutes. God made it clear through Moses that He was sovereign and would not tolerate rebellion against Him.

We are not a theocracy, but we have been the recipients of God’s blessing
Israel was a theocracy; truly God was king over them, and it makes sense that the strict laws enacted by God for Israel had both a temporal and a spiritual significance. America is not a theocracy, but we have been blessed and protected mightily by God, so it seems to me that we ought to give Him the allegiancethat He deserves. As I thought about Moses standing on Mount Nebo, surveying the Promised Land that he would not enter, I thought about how God’s divine intervention has enabled us as Americans to live in a land of promise and hope. We are the recipients of God’s grace and benevolence, but in the midst of fatness and prosperity, we have forgotten His role in our history. I cannot believe the un-changing God of the universe will let us revoke His law and ignore His providence without consequences.

Rebellion has consequences
The life issues are a perfect example of our impudence toward God. Moses said the choice before the nation of Israel was life and death: because we are not a theocracy does not exempt us from this choice. Life produces life and death produces death. Galatians six says that whatever we sow, that we shall reap. America has been sowing to the flesh and its lusts for many years and we indeed are reaping corruption as the harvest.

A controversy in Kansas over privacy vs. safety
For example, this week there was an abortion "mushroom cloud" controversy in Kansas in the form of a request by the attorney general to release records concerning underage girls who have obtained a late-term abortion. The press and others are crying "foul" because of privacy. Nowhere do I read about privacy being huge on God’s radar screen, but modern man has made privacy an ultimate human right that trumps life and protection for women and their unborn children. Americans do treasure their privacy, but at what cost? The privacy issue is being used to protect the abortion industry, sodomites and those who prey on young girls, not the victims. Privacy is always a consideration in law enforcement; the victim’s names are never mentioned or released to the press, so the strident concern by the abortion industry and others is hypocritical. This has been illustrated by the following paragraph from the "Privacy Policy" on George Tiller’s Web site (it has since been removed with the explanation it was a mistake):

"Fundraising Communications: We may contact you to request a tax-deductible contribution to support important activities of Women’s Health Care Services, PA and/or ProKanDo. In connection with any fundraising, we may disclose to our fundraising staff demographic information about you (e.g. your name, address and phone number) and dates of health care that we provided you. If you do not want to receive any fundraising requests in the future, you may contact our Privacy Officer at (316)684-5108."

Modern version of privacy and protection
This is how they view privacy? Does privacy trump safety for underage girls? Their idea of privacy is self-serving. It appears that some in our society have made their choice and the consequences will be far-reaching.
