THOUGHTS
Much has been said about the recent elections with many pundits asking the question, "What happened?" The post-mortems have been interminable, giving the indication that many in this country are clueless about values. After all the rhetoric, interminable political ads, frustrating and mind-numbing explanations of positions and misconceptions and lies, I, for one, am SO glad that it is over. I look forward to the day when the King of Kings comes and there will never be another election. We will never again have to endure advertisements that invade our homes with innuendo and half-truths. He will reign over the kings of the earth and there will be righteousness and justice on the throne.
While meditating about the election, I have come to some conclusions that may not have been articulated by those who suppose they know. First, I was so gratified to see the number of people who voted, especially Christians. The fact that they did not stay home this election was a huge factor in the outcome. We worked hard to get people registered and to vote in this election. That they voted their values was an enormous boost to my morale and confidence in the electorate. Second, I had to come to terms with the fact that no matter who won the elections, God was in control of the outcome. My task of obedience was to accept His will, no matter what I thought should happen. Third, the outcome of the election has no bearing on what we are supposed to do as Christians. We are the ones who have the truth and it is up to us to speak out in our culture for righteousness, no matter who won. We cannot sit back and wait for a man or woman to be our savior; we already have a Savior.
An illustration of this concept is in the first three chapters of Revelation Christs message to the churches. The message to the church at Philadelphia was our focus during election week. Both the message to Philadelphia and Laodicea deal with opening doors.
Considering open doors makes my fourth point: Jesus set before us an open door that no one can shut. That reinforces the sovereignty angle for me. Some could say the outcome of the election is the open door, but I believe that it is more than that. We have power through Him anytime and under any circumstance to effect change in our country . . . an open door that could open the way to a safer and more righteous society. However, the truth about doors is that you have to go through them to get to the place for which the door is an entry point. Jesus has unlocked this door by His sovereignty and we have an invitation to step through. How that is played out in the aftermath of the election remains to be seen. We must be vigilant and alert not go back to sleep as we often do. We cannot slide back into the pit of complacency and apathy; the stakes are too high for our children and grandchildren. We cannot afford to ignore an open door that is an invitation to a righteous and just society. In His message to Laodicea, Jesus is invited to come into our lives through the door of our hearts. He is on the outside and we have the key this time.
It is ironic isnt it? The King of the universe is allowing us to open or keep shut the door to our hearts and He gives us opportunities here on earth to do His will concerning righteousness.
Irregardless of what door we are choosing, it is Christ who provides the opportunity and gives strength to accomplish those tasks that He set for us before the foundation of the earth. When you think of it that way, we should be eager to take the opportunity to appropriate the open door He has given us.
