Senate Legislative Update for May 23, 2014

Human Rights Abuse: This week, Sens. Roy Blunt (R-Missouri) and Kelly Ayotte (R-New Hampshire) worked to help save a woman in Sudan who has been sentenced to death for refusing to recant her Christian faith. The woman is eight months pregnant and has been in jail with her 20-month-old son. The woman’s husband is a U.S. citizen. So far, the senators have not heard back from Secretary of State John Kerry on whether he will respond to this human rights abuse.

Nomination of David Barron: The Obama nominee for the first circuit court of appeals was narrowly passed by two votes on Thursday. This nominee drew criticism from both sides for his memo on U.S. drone use overseas. His judicial philosophy was what led Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee (CWALAC) to oppose his nomination.
