Regulating Abortion Clinics in Virginia

On August 20, 2010, Virginia’s Attorney General (AG) Ken Cuccinelli issued an opinion that Virginia may regulate abortion centers through the state’s normal regulatory process. Until the mid 1980s centers were regulated but that ended due to constitutional concerns. Since then abortion centers have been classified as doctors’ offices, which require no emergency equipment for resuscitation or hemorrhage. This opinion by the AG gives Gov. McDonnell’s administration the opportunity to create the necessary regulations without the general assembly vote.

But pro-abortion advocates in Virginia are preparing to fight the governor tooth and nail in this effort to save the unborn. That’s why I need your help.

Planned Parenthood has fought against safety standards for years; they claim that abortion is safe, even though Virginia doesn’t have any reporting requirements for complications, and so there is no way to really know. In contrast, outpatient surgery businesses are self-regulated through accreditation organizations that require significant safety measures. Why shouldn’t abortion mills in Virginia have the same requirements?

Would you help me encourage the governor to do the right thing? We want Gov. Bob McDonnell to instruct the state Board of Health to write and implement the regulations on abortion clinics that the Attorney General says are within the governor’s power to do. There are regulations already in place and being enforced on other surgical clinics in the state even veterinary clinics have regulations by which they must abide.

I can assure you that Gov. McDonnell is hearing from Planned Parenthood and their allies about this. I want him to hear from you.

3. Write letters to the editor of your local paper and call in to radio talk shows.

4. Pray.

5. Ask other believers to do steps 1-4; forward this link to them.

Thank you for taking the time to speak up for those who cannot make their voices heard.
