Nance: “Whether it’s resting your head on a loved one’s chest before they pass or finally hearing it for the first time in the doctor’s office, the importance of a heartbeat is commonsense to humanity. We have science on our side to detect heartbeats as early as six weeks and North Dakota has voted to protect life.”

Washington D.C. – The North Dakota Legislature passed HB1456, a bill that would ban most abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy, commonly when a heartbeat can be detected. Expected to be signed by North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple, HB1456 will make North Dakota the first state to specifically protect the lives of unborn once a heartbeat is detected.

Concerned Women for America applauds the life affirming votes in North Dakota and has issued the following statement from CEO and President Penny Nance:

“We have all experienced the significance of a beating heart. Whether it’s at the bedside of a loved one passing from this life into the next or in the doctor’s office hearing the heartbeat of a new life just beginning. Now that same indicator of life will finally be acknowledged and protected in the womb. Heartbeat can be upheld under the legal framework of Roe – either the Court meant what it said in Roe & Casey or it didn’t. For those who continue to question spending money on this case, do we want to live in a society where we spend $5 million in taxpayer money on Senate haircuts but cannot spend money defending life?

Concerned Women for America will stay the course if this is litigated. We do not pass legislation in fear or even in consideration of whether it will pass or be litigated; we pass legislation because it is the right thing to do. We are in this battle for the long run. This week a battle was won in North Dakota, but we do not forget the greater war in our nation for the lives of future citizens. We will continue to encourage our North Dakota members and wonderful women warriors like Rep. Bette Grande. Science is hard to deny, and the North Dakota Legislature looked it in the face last week and realized that life is worth protecting.”

CWA of North Dakota State Director Janne Myrdal responds:

“CWA of North Dakota celebrates the fact that our lawmakers have taken a legitimate stand to protect the life of unborn children through passing this common sense law. All of humanity accepts the beating human heart as a sign of life, and North Dakota now states under law that such life deserves the fullest protection.”
