Senate Bill 812 – Maintain State Authority Over Academic Standards and House Bill 1061 – Replace Common Core with NC’s Higher Academic Standards passed both Chambers. However, the battle continues!

“Come, let us rejoice in who He is. For by His great power He rules forever. God watches every movement of the nation. See what our God has done, what awesome miracles He does for His people” Psalm 66:5-7.

To all who prayed, made calls, and/or sent e-mails to our North Carolina Legislators this week, to all who have been concerned about protecting North Carolina education standards from Federal government control, THANK YOU! And let us thank God! On Wednesday, June 4, HB 1061, Replace Common Core with NC’s Higher Academic Standards, passed the North Carolina House by a veto proof majority and vote of 78 to 39. HB 1061 is sponsored by Reps. Brian Holloway (R-Stokes), Larry Pittman (R-Cabarrus), and Michael Speciale (R-Craven).

That same day, the Senate Education Committee approved an amended version of SB 812 Maintain State Authority Over Academic Standards, which then passed the Senate, with amendments, on June 5 by a vote of 33 to 15. S812 is sponsored by Sens. Dan Soucek (R-Watauga) and Jerry Tillman (R-Randolph).

SB 812 reads: AN ACT TO PRESERVE NORTH CAROLINA’S PROPER CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY OVER ALL ACADEMIC STANDARDS AND TO ENSURE THAT STANDARDS ARE ROBUST AND APPROPRIATE, AND THAT THEY ENABLE STUDENTS TO SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.

Where we are now – HB 1061 Primary Sponsor, Rep. Larry Pittman says that “SB 812 is not at all adequate. There will need to be a conference committee to work out a compromise between their version and ours.” Since different versions of the legislation have passed the House and the Senate, there will be a conference committee appointed to reconcile the two bills.

Action:
• Contact Senate President Pro Tempore Berger at (919) 733-5708 and thank him for supporting SB 812. Contact Speaker Tillis at (919) 733-3451 and thank him for supporting HB 1061. In addition, make it known to both that the bill that comes out of the conference committee needs to be a full repeal of Common Core standards.

• Lastly contact your senator and representative who voted on HB1061 and SB812. Express your thanks or disapproval based on how they voted. If they voted in favor, thank him/her for standing with a strong commitment to keep educational standards in North Carolina where they belong! If they voted against either of these bills, politely express your disapproval.

• The Battle Continues! Let your representative and senator hear from you. We will not sit idly by and let any form of Common Core standards control education in North Carolina.
