3. Ann E. W. Stone, Secretary

Ann Stone Founded the Pro-Abortion “Republicans For Choice” in 1990. (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Stone’s Early Mission Was to Remove the Pro-Life Plank from the Republican Platform. “Stone is helping to lead the rebellion against the 12-year-old plank in the GOP platform that calls for a constitutional amendment to protect ‘unborn children.’” (People Magazine, 8/24/92)

Curiously, Ann Stone’s “Republicans for Choice” PAC Raises A Lot Of Money Yet Gives Almost Nothing Out to Candidates. In the past ten years, Stone’s PAC has raised over $1.5 million from donors, yet made a paltry three $1,000 donations. Thus, roughly 2% of funds raised went to candidates, while 98% went to pay expenses.

Ann Stone And Her Businesses Have Profited Handsomely From Republicans for Choice – Taking In Over $1 Million In The Last 10 Years. Over the past ten years, Republicans for Choice has raised over $1.5 million, yet given out only $3,000 to candidates. During the same period, the PAC has paid Ann Stone and her two companies (Capstone and Stone Group) over $1 million:

Ann Stone Uses Far-Left Language to Push Her Pro-Abortion Agenda:

Stone: “The Human Life Amendment Is A Dangerous Fraud!” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Stone: Human Life Amendment Is “Terrible Policy” And “A Bunch Of Baloney.” STONE: “I am not sure which upsets me more…the fact that this Amendment is terrible policy or the fact that I believe it is a bunch of baloney and that our Party leaders are scamming the public.” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)Stone Repeats The Liberal Fallacy Of Jailed Doctors And Back-Alley Abortions. STONE: “Just as Prohibition in the 1920s was unable to end the consumption of alcohol, a Constitutional amendment to ban all abortions would actually do little to reduce the number of abortions that occur. It will, however, end the practice of safe abortions, forcing women to return to the days of back alley procedures using coat hangers and chemicals. Women and their doctors would become criminals.” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Stone Echoes Liberal Male-Bashing. STONE: “The male Republican legislators back then trusted women enough to give us the right to vote…our current crop of GOP leaders should follow their ancestors’ lead and show that they too trust women enough to let them make their own medical decisions not put that in the hands of government.” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Ann Stone Also Disagrees With “Intolerant” Conservatives On “Gay Marriage.” STONE: “But women are leaving the Party again and moderates have had it with the GOP’s intolerant policies on everything from a woman’s right to choose, alternative lifestyles or parochial cases like Terri Schiavo.” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Bipartisan? Ann Stone Is Hardly A Republican – Attacking The GOP With More Vitriol Than Most Democrats:

Stone: Republicans Took on “The Worst of the Bad Habits the Democrats Had Developed.” STONE: “Well, the American people briefly gave the GOP control of both the White House and Congress and lived to regret it.  In less than 12 years the GOP managed to take on the worst of the bad habits the Democrats had developed in the 40 years of their iron fisted rule.” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Stone: “The GOP Became the Party of Big Spending, Big Government Buttinskys.” STONE: “The GOP became the Party of Big Spending, Big Government Buttinskys who proceeded to try and control our lives from cradle (attacks on a woman’s right to choose and restricting stem cell research) to grave (Terri Schiavo).” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)Stone: “The GOP is Seen as the Party that Favors Big Government Interference in Our Lives.” STONE: “Add to all that the Patriot Act and attacks on gay rights and interference in doctor/patient relationships and it is no wonder that now the GOP is seen as the Party that favors Big Government interference in our lives!!  Boy have we gotten off course!” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

Stone: A Pro-Life Republican Party Doesn’t Deserve to Win. STONE: “I would contend that the issues and hypocrisy surrounding our Party’s conflict over a woman’s right to choose helped set the stage for the Party’s downfall this past year.  And until they recognize these problems we won’t regain the Congress or keep the White House…and frankly we won’t deserve to.” (Republicans for Choice Website, http://www.republicansforchoice.com/httpsdocs/annstone.htm, Accessed 4/20/14)

3. Susan Danish, Treasurer

Danish seems to be fairly under the radar. The below samples of her writing show that she supports empowering women, but do not indicate her positions on issues. It’s possible that her position with the Junior League prevents her from wading into controversial subjects.

In 2009, Susan Danish Wrote an Article Discussing the Different Issues Facing Women In The United States and Around the World:

Danish Highlights Equal Pay and Sexual Harassment in the Workplace as Two Issues Facing Women. “Of course the issues facing women and girls in the U.S., as other developed nations, are different than the global poor. Here we’re concerned about issues like equal pay, sexual harassment in the office place and gender stereotypes — these are not issues to be belittled even in the face of gruesome statistics from a country like Niger.” (Susan Danish, “Women’s Empowerment… Not An Issue Here?” Huffington Post, 9/24/09)

Danish Mentioned Obama’s Creation of the White House Council on Women and Girls. “In signing an Executive Order earlier this spring creating the White House Council on Women and Girls, President Obama explicitly recognized this problem … and the need to do much more ‘to ensure that our daughters and granddaughters have no limits on their dreams, no obstacles to their achievements — and that they have opportunities their mothers and grandmothers and great grandmothers never dreamed of.’” (Susan Danish, “Women’s Empowerment… Not An Issue Here?” Huffington Post, 9/24/09)

Danish Said She Felt “Compelled To Say We … Need To Do Much More In Our Lives” To Address These Issues In Meaningful Ways. “But speaking as the executive director of a major volunteer organization, I feel compelled to say that we–all of us, as individuals–need to do much more in our own lives and in our own communities to address these issues in meaningful ways.” (Susan Danish, “Women’s Empowerment… Not An Issue Here?” Huffington Post, 9/24/09)Danish Questioned The U.S.’s Ability To Champion Women’s Rights Abroad When “We Lack The Strength, Fortitude And Resolve To Achieve Equality Here.” “Because, how can the U.S. become a champion for women globally if we lack the strength, fortitude and resolve to achieve equality here, in the wealthiest democracy in the world?” (Susan Danish, “Women’s Empowerment… Not An Issue Here?” Huffington Post, 9/24/09)

Danish Also Said Americans Cannot Assume The Battle Has Been Won Domestically Without “Personal Involvement.” “And how can we, as Americans, sit back and assume that the battle is won here without our personal involvement in achieving solutions?” (Susan Danish, “Women’s Empowerment… Not An Issue Here?” Huffington Post, 9/24/09)

Danish Is The Treasurer For The National Human Services Assembly (NHSA). “[Danish currently serves as the Treasurer of the Board of the National Human Services Assembly…” (NWHM Website, http://www.nwhm.org/about-nwhm/board/officers/susan-danish, accessed 4/21/14)A Project Of NHSA, The Human Services Policy Network, Promotes A National Network To Combat Homelessness Among Gay And Lesbian Youth. Carey Shuart Co-Founded the Women’s Archive and Research Center at the University of Houston. “A supporter of the UH Women’s Studies program and co-founder of the Women’s Archive and Research Center, she provides generous support for the Women’s Archive and Research Collection.” (Women’s Archive and Research Collection Website, http://info.lib.uh.edu, Accessed 4/21/14)

Shuart Served on Democratic Texas Governor Ann Richards’ Leadership Council.  “Additionally, Ms. Shuart was a member of Governor Ann Richards’ Leadership Council, a Board Member and Houston Representative of the Texas Arts Alliance, and has had several roles with the Junior League of Houston, the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Texas, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston.” (National Women’s History Museum Website, http://www.nwhm.org, Accessed 4/21/14)

Shuart Was Listed as a Supporter of a Democratic Organization Called ROADwomen. (ROADwomen Cached Website, http://webcache.googleusercontent.com, Accessed 4/21/14)

When the sun sets and the moon spreads its cool blue glow across the peaceful nightscape, John Totersohn’s mind takes him to deeply frightening places. Soon after a series of sessions with a skilled psychologist begins to calm John’s restless visions, the haunted man successfully courts a woman named Sarah into a tentative relationship with a little help from his good looks and his boyish charm. Thrust into a world of rage and anger upon discovering that Sarah is pregnant with his child, John then attempts to pull himself together long enough to propose to Sarah and set his life straight. It’s all too little too late, though, and after humiliating Sarah in front of her family and friends, degrading her sexually, and tightening his grip on her to the point of suffocation, Sarah soon reveals that she has aborted the baby and wishes to make a clean break from the relationship. The only thing that has broken, however, is John’s mind. Now convinced that his doctor and former fiancée have joined forces in a conspiracy to drive him mad, John offers living proof that no matter how well you may thing that you know someone, you never truly understand them until their absolute worst comes boiling to the surface.” (Barnes and Noble Website, www.barnesandnoble.com, Accessed 4/20/14)

In the late-1960s ‘I tried to get a JC Penny credit card, but couldn’t because I didn’t have a husband,’ she says. ‘I owned a car, my own house and my own businesses. It never occurred to me that we didn’t have those rights. I wasn’t a liberated woman until those years.’” (Stephanie Yacenda, “21 Leaders 2012 – Seven Who Engender Ballots,” WomensENews, 1/3/12)

“In 2003, [Scanlan] Received the Women’s Leadership Award from the International Women’s Democracy Center Along with Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts.” (National Council of Women’s Organizations Website, www.womensorganizations.org, Accessed 4/21/14)

Scanlan Serves as Co-Chair of a Charitable Foundation in Dallas, TX that Supports the Arts, Education, Women’s and “LGBTQ” Causes. “She is co-chair of the Fannie and Stephen Kahn Charitable Foundation of Dallas, TX, a small, private philanthropic group that supports the arts, education, women’s and LGBTQ causes.” (National Council of Women’s Organizations Website, www.womensorganizations.org, Accessed 4/21/14)

During the March for Life in 2007, Scanlan Said She Was Speaking for Her Generation, Recalling “Memories Of Women Going To Grimy Apartments,” Noting She Took Such a Trip with a College Roommate in 1968. “As the women spoke, some in English and some in Spanish, their words were interrupted by about 100 abortion rights advocates linking arms and holding signs saying: ‘Trust women.’ ‘Tonight I’m going to speak for my generation,’ said Susan Scanlan, chairwoman of the National Council of Women’s Organizations. ‘Younger women do not share our memories of women going to grimy apartments. I took such a trip with a college roommate in 1968.’ As Scanlon spoke, a chorus of abortion opponents rose in volume chanting Hail Marys.” (Michael Alison Chandler and Michelle Boorstein, “Abortion Foes to Renew Efforts,” The Washington Post, 1/23/07)

Scanlan Said the National Council of Women’s Organizations was “Dismayed” by Samuel Alito’s “Hostility to Women’s Rights.” “‘We are dismayed by Judge Alito’s hostility to women’s rights,’ said Susan Scanlan, chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations, which counts 200 feminist-oriented groups as members.” (Bob Egelko, “Alito’s Record Has Feminists Ready For Battle,” San Francisco Chronicle, 11/23/05)

Scanlan and Fellow National Council of Women’s Organizations Exec Terry O’Neil Penned a Letter to Senators Leahy and Specter Opposing the Nomination of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. “In nominating Samuel Alito after Harriet Myers withdrew from consideration, President Bush chose to put political expediency ahead of the rights and well-being of this nation’s women and girls. Mr. Bush’s right-wing base clamored for rejection of Ms. Myers because, as conservative as she is, they felt she was not 100 percent pure on their issues. Samuel Alito, however, is apparently their man.” (Susan Scanlan and Terry O’Neil, National Council of Women’s Organizations, Letter To Senators Patrick Leahy and Arlen Specter Regarding The Nomination Of Samuel Alito To The U.S. Supreme Court, 1/11/06)

The Letter Said Alito Had a “Long Record Demonstrating Hostility To Women’s Reproductive Rights.” “Judge Alito has a long record demonstrating hostility to women’s reproductive rights. In the 1980’s, he repeatedly advocated the overturning of Roe v. Wade. In the 1990’s, as an appellate judge, he argued to uphold a Pennsylvania statute requiring women to notify their husbands before having an abortion–a position rejected by Justice O’Connor’s 5-4 opinion in Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Nowhere in his writings, however, does he express any concern that the days of back-alley abortions could return if women do not have safe, legal means to terminate unwanted pregnancies. Nor have we been able to find any statement of concern, in any of his writings, for women’s fundamental right to be in control of their own reproductive health decisions.” (Susan Scanlan and Terry O’Neil, National Council of Women’s Organizations, Letter To Senators Patrick Leahy and Arlen Specter Regarding The Nomination Of Samuel Alito To The U.S. Supreme Court, 1/11/06)

The Letter Also Complained of Alito’s “Hostility to Contraception.” “Indeed, Judge Alito has even expressed hostility to contraception. In 1985, as a Justice Department attorney, he wrote that some forms of birth control are ‘abortifacients,’ and saw no constitutional problem with a state law restricting women’s access to them. Extreme anti-abortion organizations have long argued that the IUD and some birth control pills are ‘abortifacients’–subject to the same kinds of restrictions that may be placed on women’s access to abortion–because they may prevent a fertilized egg from becoming implanted on the uterine wall.” (Susan Scanlan and Terry O’Neil, National Council of Women’s Organizations, Letter To Senators Patrick Leahy and Arlen Specter Regarding The Nomination Of Samuel Alito To The U.S. Supreme Court, 1/11/06)

10. Wilma L. Vaught, Brigadier General USAF (Ret.)

Vaught Signed a Letter in Support of the Shaheen Amendment in 2011, Which Would Provide Abortion Coverage for Servicewomen and Dependents Who Are Victims of Rape And Incest. “We, the undersigned flag officers, write in strong support of the Shaheen Amendment to the FY12 National Defense Authorization Act (S. 1867) that provides abortion coverage for servicewomen and dependents who are victims of rape and incest.” (Wilma L. Vaught, et. al., U.S. Armed Forces Flag Officers Letter In Support Of The Shaheen Amendment To The FY12 National Defense Authorization Act, November 2011)

The Letter Said Women in The Military “Should Have Access To The Full Range Of Medical Care, Including Comprehensive Reproductive Health Care.” “We also believe that our women in the military, who serve their country and in many cases risk their lives and safety to preserve our freedoms, should have access to the full range of medical care, including comprehensive reproductive health care.” (Wilma L. Vaught, et. al., U.S. Armed Forces Flag Officers Letter In Support Of The Shaheen Amendment To The FY12 National Defense Authorization Act, November 2011)

Vaught Said “No Men Should Be Lecturing” Women about Their Reproductive Lives, Saying Men Are “Perfectly Willing to Vote And Take Away” Rights that Should Be Between a Woman and Her Doctor. “Vaught, an American pioneer for women in the military, is a living example of how far women in the military have come. The women applauding her were pilots, warship commanders, rear admirals and platoon leaders. No men should be lecturing these women about any aspect of their reproductive lives, Vaught said. ‘As I watch this whole thing, the talk about sex – contraception and abortion and all these other things – I look at legislators, who are majority male,’ Vaught told me. ‘They’re perfectly willing to vote and take away’ rights that should be between women and their doctors.” (Petula Dvorak, “Military Conference Offers A Woman’s Perspective,” The Washington Post, 3/6/12)
