There has been a somber tone on Capitol Hill this week, as people came to work on Monday after receiving shocking news over the weekend.

On Saturday, January 8, 2011, tragedy struck the country when a gunman terrorized an event hosted by Representative Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) in Tuscon, Arizona. The Congress at Your Corner event started out like any other community outreach initiative, until 22-year-old Jared Loughner shot several people at close range, ultimately wounding 14 people and killing six.Among the wounded is Representative Giffords, who appears to have been the main target of the attack. She is now in critical condition after a bullet struck her in the head.

On Monday, January 10, 2011, a prayer service was held in the House of Representatives to pray for Representative Giffords, the others who were injured, and the families of those killed.Republican leaders delayed all legislative business, including a vote to repeal ObamaCare, till next week.In the meantime, Washington continues to grapple with the aftershocks of this horrific act.

Concerned Women for America (CWA) sent a prayer alert to our members asking them to pray for Representative Giffords, those who are still fighting for their lives, and the families of everyone wounded or killed in the attack. There is still much legislative work to be done, but for now, CWA staff is trying to encourage and support those affected by the tragedy.
